The Wellington Hills Sports Complex? No, it's NOT a done deal!

This isn't Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood

"It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood, A beautiful day for a neighbor..."

Sorry, Mr. Rogers but today our neighborhood got mugged, it's not a nice day.

This was the Wellington Hills Golf Course Clubhouse.

                                                        What is this rubble pile?

                                                    Pieces of Woodinville's history.

This is how it is

After listening to them attempt to convince us with their go-go plans of how gee-whizz wonderful a mega-sports complex would be in Wellington Hills Park, I get the sense, this is how they view the residents of Southern Snohomish County, near Woodinville … we're just parcels of ground.

Currently this is what it looks like and it's also how the residents of the greater Woodinville area view Wellington Hills Park.

The masterminds of the proposed mega-sports complex want two parking lots for over 700 cars bulldozed into the Green Space of Wellington Hills Park.

Notice that dense grove of trees seen in the right lower quadrant of the photo? If their plan is approved, the trees are gone, history, firewood, kaput.

After the tree are removed the area would be dug out, perhaps as much as 15 to 20 feet in depth and they would build seven sports fields, four of which are covered with artificial turf … and there would be stadium lights.

Like the song says, "They paved paradise to put up a parking lot."

Please, call the five members of the Snohomish County Council and tell them, "No, the proposed Wellington Hills Park sports complex is a bad plan."

Today, Wellington Hills Park, Prepping for Destruction

Just click on photos for enlargement

We were told by the on-site foreman, they are knocking down the three buildings on the Wellington Hills Park property. He said they will be finished in a few days.

About the last blog photos showing clear-cut land

Here's a bit of Brightwater mitigation information and actual Google Map images of property located at 228th St. SE & 39th Ave. SE in Bothell, WA.

In the previous blog posting there are photos of the clear-cutting that's taken place at
 228th & 39th.

It's obvious, in the blog photos many trees have been cut, and if you refer to the Google Map images, the houses located next to the now tree-less property HAD large trees at their fence line.

The trees next to the houses have been cut and from the photos in the previous blog, you can see large machines parked very close to those houses.

Photo 1.

228th is at the bottom edge of the photo.

The yellow dot in the wooded area is where the photos were taken of the clear cutting.

The yellow dow, top right corner, is where the "Protected Growth Protected Area" sign was located.

Photo 3.

I've highlighted information pertinent to the 228th & 39th property.

You can see that 5.5 million dollars of Brightwater Mitigation funds were spent on purchasing and developing the property.

One possible future - UPDATED

If you don't care about Wellington Hills Park being a Community Park and you don't want to act on saving the Park while also protecting your Quality of Life ...

Here's what will happen.

ps: Apparently the County is attempting humor (?) .

Next to the street, on the edge of all the clear-cutting … is a sign …

which sits in front of a strip of scrubby, weedy trees and the clear-cut area is partially blocked from view.

A few minutes with a muse

A few weeks ago when we experienced both fog and snow I spent many hours walking throughout Wellington Hills Park, looking for good-to-great photography opportunities.  There were a few photos I captured I consider to be some of the best photos I’ve ever taken.

I’m a hard critic on myself, that comes from the art schools I attended. No-nonsense teachers critiqued our work and occasionally someone’s freshly mounted on board print went sailing across the room - a very non-verbal criticism of the photo. The words, “re-do” were commonly said to students.

Occasionally, there would be long discussions concerning a student’s work.  The critique usually included references and comparisons to dozens of historic photographers along with their intentions, philosophies and their motivations.

Back to Wellington Hills Park.

As I was studying a particular scene, I sensed the presence - or the words of a great person who spoke often on ecology and environmentalism.

With backpack and walking stick this person walked America. His passion for nature was strong - strong enough he eventually gained an audience with an American President and from those meetings came the beginnings of the National Park system.  His activism for nature and wild places helped preserve Yosemite, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas.

He founded the Sierra Club and he frequently said, “Wild is superior”. John really felt God in the wilderness, each tree had intrinsic value and forests were places a person could go in order to re-charge the batteries of their souls.

John fought to preserve wild places and green places.  He cried over nature lost to bulldozers and axes, he never understood those with cold hearts who wanted to pave over beautiful natural places.

Yes, I felt the words and values of John Muir as I was composing photos that day.

I’d like to think he was near-by as I walked the rolling hills and felt the essence of the 100 year old trees in Wellington Hills Park.

if only John Muir was here

For real

I did not pose this photo.  We were walking around in Wellington Hills Park and suddenly she hugged a tree.  Naturally I took a picture.

Naturally it's a tree the Department of Parks and Recs wants to cut down. She doesn't know that - yet.

Attention Snohomish County bureaucrats:
As far as Wellington Hills Park being changed into an "active use" park, well duh.

Not mentioned at The Wellington Hills Park public meeting

Several of us attended a recent County's Park and Rec ad hoc planning committee.  We heard about the newest changes to the park plan and we listened to the committee's discussion of the plans  - most of what was repeated at the 1/31/13 public meeting held at Brightwater.

One detail I didn't hear mentioned at Brightwater:

Parks and Recs plans to knock down the golf course buildings sometime during the next month.

The two club house structures, the sheds used for golf carts storage and the boarded-up house at the eastern edge of the grassy area will be demolished.

I mention this, not because the buildings are remarkable but because the County is proceeding as if their proposed change to Wellington Park is a "Done Deal".

On the contrary - the sports complex is NOT A DONE DEAL!

If the neighborhood raises it's voice, writes letters to the Snohomish County Council telling them the current plan stinks ... and if the community donates time and money to the Neighbors to Save Wellington Park (NSWP) legal fund - the outcome will be different.

Just because a few people are pushing for a sports complex - doesn't make their plan a good one.

A Community Park is much better than a special interest park.
